GPSed – Track Your Trips

I really liked this app. It allows you to plot a trip using the iPhone’s built in GPS and save the information for use later. When you are actually taking the trip, whether driving, walking or flying, it shows you your average speed, top speed and distance traveled as well as how long it takes you to complete each step of the journey. This is helpful for keeping track of mileage if you need reimbursement for work and for finding out how long a trip actually takes instead of relying on estimates from mapping programs.
The only flaw I found isn’t really with the app but with how the iPhone handles background processes. If your phone times out and goes to sleep, the app pauses until you power it back on. This causes your speeds to become skewed and report wrong, since the app won’t know the program stopped and will instead catch up by immediately adding the new miles traveled when it kicks back in.

Since the phone timed out while I was driving and then kicked back on a couple minutes later, the app assumed I jumped 10 miles in two seconds and gave me an insanely high travel speed of over 120 miles per hour (which is not even possible in my little car). Aside from this little hiccup, the app works as promised and was very helpful.
The app doesn’t have much in the way of graphics or sound. It’s just an allover simple design. It also doesn’t provide maps, just odometer, time and speed statistics.

VR+ Voice Messenger

This app is a voice recorder that lets you record a sound, be it your dog barking, your bad singing or a song you hear on the radio, by touching the record button on the bottom left of the screen. Once you stop the recording, by touching the stop button of course, you can play it back or send it to friends.
To do this, simply find the date and time you made the recording in a list that appears on the home screen. Touch the arrow button directly following the listing. Then you can choose to send your recording by email, upload it to your social networking sites, such as FaceBook or Blogger, or just transfer it to VR+ online. You can also rename the recording or delete it. The sound quality seemed to be pretty good. I had no problems hearing or understanding what I recorded, even when all I was doing was tapping the iPhone screen.

It is worth noting that the app requires you to set up a VR+ account, which is where the links from your social networking sites will lead. However, once your VR+ account is set up you can store your login information for each social networking site you use so you can easily create a post and attach the recording without having to launch the site separately.
I like the idea of being able to post directly to social networking sites instead of having to jump through hoops, especially if I am short on time. This app would be very helpful for impromptu podcasting, such as when I’m at a conference or festival and want to give frequent event updates in voiceover form. There are no instructions provided with the app, but it is very user friendly.

Magicard

This app is meant for all the aspiring magicians out there. It was created to supplement the good old “I can guess your card” trick with a matching image on the iPhone. The user is supposed to perform the trick with a regular deck of cards and then tap his or her iPhone for the big reveal at the end. The phone will actually show an image of the card the audience member picked, giving the trick some technological flair.
There are several options available for the user by going into the iPhone’s setting menu. You can choose the suit and value for the card, whether it appears with a touch or with a double click and how quick the animation moves from blank screen or background to the card’s image.

The app has a tutorial video that explains how to do the trick which you can reach from the home screen. However, it wasn’t very in depth at explaining how to make the trick entertaining for the audience. In fact, it wasn’t even written in understandable English, but I could follow along thanks to the graphics and eventually the video images, which were pretty good.
I was able to duplicate the trick shown in the video tutorial without difficulty, but the group I showed it to did not find it to be particularly good. The fact that the app only demonstrates one trick is more than a little disappointing. I would instead read a book on magic and then add the app into the mix for any number of tricks that require a card reveal at the end.

Pocket God

I had mixed impressions of Pocket Gods at first because it isn’t a game it’s a entertainment app but has the fell of playing a game. The graphics are just ok nothing to write home about while the audio isn’t bad, some sort of tropical Island Music. In this app you are playing God to primitive islanders, you rule and can create new life and take life away just as quickly.
Once you start the app click on the question mark in the upper right corner this is basic instructions on what to do. Now I’m sure you have noticed that there is only one islander to add more up to six at time click the plus sign in the upper left corner and islander will start dropping down on to your island. After you add islanders you can begin to rule, you can feed the coconuts, you can flicking them in to the water to drown or flick them in to the volcano which gets closer to exploding each time you get one in and on the third islander in the volcano bursts shooting hot lava on your islanders back on the island, you can pick them up and drop them, poke them, drop the rock on them, hit them with lightning, feed them to the shark everything and vengeful god would do.

Along with being mean to my islanders I can change day to dusk and than night which will cause my islanders to sleep i also can make it a clear sky or cloudy with lightning, by shaking my iphone it causes a earth quake and by tilting side to side the islanders will slide in that direction and in to the water. I’ve pretty much described how the app works and the features of Pocket God for the iPhone, Now you can become the Powerful God Of The Island.
Even though my at first I wasn’t sure about Pocket Gods in the past 4 days while testing for this review I have grown fond of this app all thought there is no real purpose to what you do in this app it is fun and addicting. Despite the lack of quality graphics I still found it to be a joy, I played it for several hours over the four days I tested it for the review and have 9 times since for entertainment and to show friend and get there insight on this app. Overall I would recommend this app for $0.99 to everyone, and I shared it with 5 of my friends and all but one was on board with my thoughts.

iDracula

I really like this iDracula app and can see why it has become the top paid app on itunes in just 8 days of it’s release, That speaks for it’s self. So i downloaded this app with great anticipation after seeing the popularity and screen shot, the graphics in my opinion are some of the best I’ve yet to see on the iPhone.
Immediately after I download iDracula I`m ready to check it out. Once app started I came to the main menu, First impressions are details in graphics so far are cool and the main menu interface is similar to that of the PSP or Nintendo DS games. There are 5 buttons on the main menu starting with Play Game, Options, High Scores, Credits and Instructions. Play Game obviously starts game play, under the options button you have several options such as disable sound, swap control wheels, sound volume and so fourth. For the Instructions it’s A image with written instructions on it detailing how to play and I think High Scores and Credits are self–explanatory.

Now it’s game time. Tap Play Game and you will come to options screen to choose game type either Survival or Rush. choose game type you want to play and hit ok, you will notice the two circles in the lower corners these control your movements, walking, spinning around and shooting. Now the differences between the two types of game play are in Survival monsters are constantly coming at you from all directions but at a reasonable rate in Rush you are bombarded with a slew of monsters “Good Luck”. In survival you start with single shoot gun with other guns appearing on the screen as you kill monsters, In Rush you start with a gatlin style gun which is pretty awesome but I didn’t see any other gun types on the screen so either your suck with what you have or I didn’t kill enough monsters. You also pickup power, and omens after you kill certain monsters during game play. Once you’ve died you will be presented with a stat screen showing how long you survived, the number of monsters you killed, how many Omens you picked up , etc…
I have only made it a few levels on both types of game play but like the game play, The Graphics are great and audio rocks as well. I’m not sure what the regular price of iDracula is but at the time of my review it is on sale for $0.99 and I would say this game would be worth buying even if it had a price of $4.99. I loved it and have been playing it for the past 3 days as I tested it for this review. I can also say that my 3G is packed full with 9 pages of app’s and I needed to delete app’s off the do this review and several others and this one will be one that stays for awhile. Thumbs Up on this app I Highly Recommend iDracula and at $0.99 you can’t go wrong. Could Be Game Of The Year Total package”

iAqua

This app is fairly similar to other match the colors games, like Super Bubble Pop. The playing pieces resemble drops of water slowly moving down the screen. To clear them out, you must match them in sets of four or more, either horizontally, vertically or in a cube shape with two on top and two on bottom.
The screen is always full of circles, with no empty space available, so you have to make your matches by rotating the circles that are already on the screen with your fingertips. You can only move them in groups of four at a time. This doesn’t make for the easiest game play, since it’s hard to tell which group of four the app will choose to move (there are four options for each individual circle unless it’s on the edge of the screen) and the direction in which it decides to rotate. Hopefully, this will be improved in future versions, since it gets frustrating pretty quickly.

Once you do get the hang of moving the circles, you can increase the amount of time you have each time you create a combo of four or more. But watch out for when your iPhone vibrates; that means you are in trouble. When you reach a certain score you level up and get more challenging pieces to work with, such as grey squares, which make it so the circles adjacent to them are immobile. There are also more circle colors as the game goes on.
Features include the ability to turn the sound and vibration off. (I would definitely lose the vibration after the first couple of games.) There’s also a score board that lists your initials, level and largest combo plus the option to submit your number for worldwide fame and see the top 50. Sadly, my name was not on there. This game definitely has promise and is worth a try.

IM+ for Skype

This app is for people that use the Skype Internet telephone system. It allows you to use SkypeOut credits, similar to calling card minutes, to make calls and send text messages to people in your iPhone’s contacts list. It can also connect you to your Skype account, be it paid or standard, so you can use your iPhone to make calls when you’re away from your computer.
Of course, to use this app, you have to be registered with Skype. However, the people that you call or text do not have to be, though it is easier if they are. You can add other Skype users to an in-app contacts list to see when they are connected to Skype and available. You can also schedule conference calls or other events and indicate when you are free to chat.

This app is great for people who have a lot of friends and family that live overseas. It can be helpful to use Skyepout credits instead of having to use cell phone minutes, which are subject to hefty roaming charges. I did not see any way to purchase Skypeout credits through the app. It seems that you have to either buy them beforehand or make a trip to the Skype website from your iPhone’s Internet browser. So the app does take some planning. You can’t just pick it up out of the blue and use it.
The interface is very easy to use and pretty much self explanatory. I would recommend it for all regular Skype users.

iStream

This app is a gift to all the footie fans out there. It allows them to view soccer scores for all teams in the English Premiere League. The home screen features the team names, their crests, their win/loss/draw records, and their total points. You can then touch match day at the bottom of the screen to see the most recent showdowns.
Pick fixtures/results to view information on past as well as upcoming matches in the current soccer season. Touch the arrow after the date and you will see each match location, the score and which footballer made the score. The app updates frequently so it will always have current information.
One thing I found difficult is that you can’t simply tap the arrow like you can on some apps. You have to hold your finger down until the app highlights the date in blue and then it will proceed to the information screens. Because of this delay I at first thought it didn’t work and I am sure that some will find it frustrating.
I wasn’t too interested in this app, since I am not a huge fan of soccer. However, it is good app to have if you want to keep updated on the goings on of these teams. All of the times posted are in GMT, so keep that in mind if you are viewing the app stateside. The graphics are decent and there is no sound. The info page is simply an invitation to visit the developer’s website.
